NOTE: Big Rock Sudbury School is closed as of June 16, 2007, and is no longer in operation. We had a blast but there was not enough interest to keep it going. Our thanks go to all of the students, parents, staff and volunteers that made the school a reality, for all the support and passion that went into the school over the four fun even if bumpy years of existence, and for the difference that it made for the almost 70 kids and their families that attended Big Rock Sudbury School during that time. This is the web site as it was at the time of closing. We provide it for informational purposes only, and it has not been maintained since the school was closed. Thanks for your interest in Sudbury education!

How do we learn?

Humans are curious by nature. When we begin our lives, our thirst for knowledge is insatiable, our drive to explore is all but unstoppable. Nobody needs to teach us how to walk or speak– we naturally acquire these complex skills simply through our strong desire to master our environment. This powerful ability is built into all of us. Where conventional schools require children to turn off their personal interests Sudbury allows this drive to continue and flourish.

What is traditional education?

Traditional education attempts to shortcut children’s natural exploration process by assuming that students cannot be trusted to have meaningful interests themselves; that for a healthy development, kids need to be told by "experts" what they ought to be interested in.

Sudbury students develop their interests, personalities and character along with their education. This process is very fun for families because Sudbury students love school and have a wonderful childhood while also getting the best education for a successful, happy life.

How do we live in a community?

Our nation is built on the fundamental rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, freedom of speech, right of free assembly. These rights are integral to peace, progress, prosperity and our happiness. When we extend these rights to children, superior education and life preparation result.
